Benefits. For Owners - higher resale values, to match inflation. For Landlords - higher return on investment, albeit with imposed restrictions. For Households - Lower running costs, greater comfort and security, better physical and mental health. Satisfaction that one is doing one’s bit for OUR World, by growing one’s own food, thereby reducing dependence on Big Oil, Big Food, Utility Companies, and all their delivery systems.
Barriers. The extra costs of Going Green, which could be offset by removing the vast state subsidies for Big Oil and Big Food, and by taxing the Greedy Rich. Lack of awareness and acceptance of the real causes of housing poverty. Reluctance of the filthy rich to change the status quo. Incompetence and/or corruption causing delays within some National and Local Planning Authorities. But the biggest barrier of all is the totally unfair distribution of land. When the Monarchy, a.k.a. Big Bandits, aided by the church and aristocracy “decreed” that they owned it all, the rest of us were sunk.

The population of the UK is 60 Million. There are 60 Million Acres in the UK. The average estate house sits on les than a tenth of an acre. Ergo the average person owns or rents approx 2.5% of an acre, whilst…… The Church of England own 200,000 Acres, Duke of Westminster owns 133,000 Acres, of which 300 in London comprise the most valuable land holding in the UK. Twenty or so Aristocrats and Foreign Billionaires own between 80,000 and 240,000 acres each. The Crown own 678,000 Acres. Let’s imagine that these Conservatives Actually cared about the rest of us, and in a fit of Wild Generosity were to give 10% of their land away……. mmm…… think on…… over five million people in tiny houses with big gardens, would solve the homeless problem Fifteen times over.
Will it happen ? Could it happen ? Not under this Government….. Under a Greener, socially minded government supported by grass roots organizations, only then such concepts could be discussed without fear. Some such concepts would become reality. Without fearless discussion, the Right Wing will CONtinue to Rule, NOT ok. For far too long, the people of the UK have been suckered by the Right Wing Media telling us that “voting changes nothing”. RHUBARB !! The country needs a major housing revolution, starting years ago, progressing with gusto towards an equitable housing revolution. Towards Humane and Planetary goals rather than driven by the goals of conmenselfservative profit. Vote with intelligence…..

Well, you're certainly singing my song Maurice! I was doing some research into English land law for my current novel and it's so very archaic still...so many holdovers from 1066, it's eye-wateringly complex and yet....the solutions really aren't.
