Fantastic story and what a brilliant piece of historical research. Your excellent writing brings it to life, especially as it resonates with the history we learned in school. This piece deserves a wider Australian audience, as many, like me, would appreciate this snippet of our fascinating early colonial history.

If you've not visited Sydney, you should, if possible. Fascinating history, a wonderful city.

Thanks Douglas. Never been to Australia, wanted to be a ten pounder as a teenager. Mum refused, so I joined the army instead.

Some months ago I came across an article on two engineers who built the sewers of Sydney. Now I can't find the article. They were Bisby, father and son.

Aunt Alice also told me that another brother of Sam and Josh built a large sheep station in Queensland. This may have been uncle Ashley ? Ashleigh ? Ainsley ?
